The Wetumpka Fire Department is a paid-on-call volunteer department comprised of 45 active members, 90% of whom are state-certified firefighters. We operate four stations and nine major pieces of apparatus, providing fire protection and rescue services to some 21,000 people within a 70 square mile coverage district which includes the Wetumpka Municipal Airport. In 2007 we responded to over 395 incidents.
The department is funded primarily by the City of Wetumpka, and supplemented by the annual $50 residential and $100 business fire protection fees collected within the Wetumpka fire protection district. In return for this small fee, citizens in our coverage area enjoy significant fire insurance savings made possible by the Wetumpka Fire Department's ISO Class 4 insurance rating.
As a member organization of the Elmore County Firefighters Association, WFD offers and receives mutual aid as needed beyond the borders of our coverage area and throughout Elmore County. We work closely with all departments in the county, particularly the neighboring fire districts of Elmore, Holtville, Titus, Byuck, Santuck, Eclectic, Emerald Mountain, and Redland, to provide the best possible protection to the citizens of Wetumpka and the surrounding area.
